Last Glimpse

I little something you will find in Sanity’s Threshold to be released October 3!

guillotine

The blade bit hard and true. I told Sarah not to worry, there would be no pain, and I was right. As my head hits the hard ground, I hope to catch a glimpse of her before I die, before my lights go out forever. Her wail fills the courtyard, the last sound to touch my ears. She’s there in the crowd, tears streaming, holding Tomas. Never again will I hold his hand, inhale his baby scent, or smell her lavender hair. I want to tell her that it’ll be all right, the deed is done. Goodbye, my love, don’t grieve….

Baby Harriett

chair under tree

Momma don’t talk much about Baby Harriett, and I don’t ask. Things back then just happened to folks. Not much you can do bout it. Whooping cough, ‘sumption, the pox─ they took the young, the old, the in-between─ pickin’ and choosin’ random-like.

I think bout her itty-bitty body all red and scrunched up. Reckon she never suffered much─ gone afore she got a belly full. Don’t mean we don’t miss her, cause we do.

I’m still at the old place tending the garden and watering the cottonwood tree Momma planted not long after Harriett died. Every night Momma would sit under that tree and sing a lullaby─ her way of mourning, I guess. That tree took right off, grew like crazy.

Makes me wonder

Goodbye

goodbye

He helps me unload the last of my stuff on my new door step.

“You can stay, if you want. I want you to stay.”

I hate him for not caring. I hate him for giving up on us. I hate him, but I want him to stay.

I had been his Wild Thing. He will always be my Knight in Shining Armor. Chaos and calm. Reckless and reserved.  A perfect couple; perfect opposites. Our affair lasted a decade. He divorced his wife, but he never recovered from the humiliation of having a mistress. It went against his nature. Predictability and responsibility were his guideposts.

I scared him at first, and made him feel alive in a dead marriage, but when the newness wore off, I didn’t live up to his vision of the perfect woman. I had so much to offer, just nothing he wanted.

“It’s a long drive, I should get going.”

“Do you remember the hour we met?”

“Of course, I do.” He wraps his arms around me─ one last hug. He wants to leave. He can’t wait for it to be over.

“We’ll always be friends.”

The kiss of death.

I love him now, even as I watch him walk away. I left him today; but he left me a long time ago.Flash Fiction

Binge Watching

Little something I had published today. Hope it makes you smile.bingewatching

http://five2onemagazine.com/thesideshow-july-6th-2016/

I don’t remember how long I been sitting here. I vaguely remember getting up to take a dump, but that might a been yesterday. I’m on episode one hundred thirty-eight of Criminal Minds. This month I’m watching detective shows and crime dramas, you know, like 24 and Dexter. Last month it was science fiction. There’s a bonanza of Dr. Who episodes. I got it all planned out, if you know what I mean.

I bought one a ‘em little refrigerators, the kind like they put in motel rooms these days. I took the shelves out so I can stack more beer in it. If I arrange it just right I can almost get two cases in. Got a great deal on Old Milwaukee couple weeks back and practically bought the liquor store out. Have it all stacked behind my La-Z-Boy so I can grab me a warm twelve pack and restock, keep it circulating, if you know what I mean.

I got the pizza dude on speed dial. Yeah, Justin, that’s his name, brings ‘em right in for me, don’t even have ta get up outta my chair. How awesome is that? Wish he would take back the empties; they’re kinda stacking up, if you know what I mean.

Yup, got the perfect little man-cave going on here. Now I only got ta get up ta take a crap. Just between you and me, found me a jug ta put next ta my La-Z-Boy. I keep a lid on it. Wouldn’t want ta kick it over accidental, if you know what I mean.

Ran out of sick leave so I went ahead and took my vacation days. Just don’t feel much like getting up outta the ol’ recliner. Not much point ta it. I got me shit-ton of House episodes ta watch. Don’t need ta go nowhere. Everything I need is within arm’s reach, if you know what I mean.

I’m a huge fan of Netflix and the internet is pretty cool, but the best thing about the World Wide Web is that you can buy anything online, anytime, and it is delivered right ta your door. Ta your door!  I don’t go anywhere anymore. Don’t got ta. Can do most everything online; pay bills, buy food, watch anything on-demand. Amazon is the most awesome invention ever. Did you know they deliver Pringles? I hate Walmart, if you know what I mean.

I ain’t been in my bedroom in three, four weeks. The recliner is a whole lot more comfortable than that lumpy piece of shit mattress. Don’t use the kitchen much, never did. Not much of a cook and I hate washing dishes. That’s why I call Justin. Whole lot easier. Never have ta get outta the chair, if you know what I mean.

It’s been a long time since I smelt fresh air. Ain’t nothing fresh about me.  Really ought ta shower but I don’t want ta miss my show. Yeah, I know I can pause it, but I can’t find my remote. Think it might be hiding in my chair, but it’s hard ta raise my ass high enough ta feel around, if you know what I mean.

Something smells funny. Like ass. I don’t know, maybe it’s mold. Hell might be my ass. Been a while since I took anything more than a whore’s bath. Still waiting for the nurse ta come over and give me my sponge bath, if you know what I mean.

Yesterday I thought about getting the mail but couldn’t think of one good reason ta do it. Besides I’m too tired. It’s weird how the hours go by so quick and so slow at the same time. Slept for sixteen hours last night. Don’t know how that’s even possible. It’s not like I exert myself or anything, if you know what I mean.

Not sure what time of day it is. Everything is kinda gray outside. Think I’ll go back to sleep, if you know what I mean.

Lost to me

baby

You began on a summer day, hot and breathless, fire and passion. I loved him far more than he pretended to care. When I looked into his eyes, my world evaporated. His lust consumed me. I confused it with love.

For him, the flame burned briefly, like a shooting star, before I faded away forgotten. By the time I discovered you, I was alone, afraid, a child left to answer an adult question.

Nine months you were my constant companion, reminding me of innocence lost. With every kick, I told myself you belonged to someone else. With every drip from my laden breasts, I shed a tear.

You were born in the spring amid fragrant flowers and regrets. I signed the papers and said goodbye to you. Your loss left a fissure, my heart unrepairable. I wanted to hold you, but I knew I wouldn’t let you go. Perfect toes someone else would paint. Blonde hair someone else would braid.

I love you to this day, even though I don’t know you. You will always be a part of me, a dent on my soul, a decision I regret I had to make. Lost to me.

Tower of Earth

Malik, devastated by the brutal murder of his parents, flees the Silver Oak Forest with Scalone, an ancient wizard. The wizard, consumed by a dream and the drink he uses to suppress it, has led the enemy to Malik’s door.

Malik resides in the Rejaque Kingdom, which is protected by The Wall, a force field that emanates from five towers strategically placed around its borders. Each tower is protected by a wizard who is given a key that controls their respective portion of The Wall. Zorad, the wizard to the Tower of Earth, succumbing to his paranoia, greed, and insatiable need to control the kingdom, is threatened by Scalone’s dream which hints of Zorad’s downfall at the hands of a young Ootime boy, i.e. Malik. Zorad uses his authority to commit genocide on the Ootime race.

Malik puts part of the blame on Scalone for his parents’ death, but must rely on the aged wizard to survive and teach him about his newly discovered powers. He vows to extract revenge against Zorad for the death of his people.

They flee to the Tower of Knowledge to council with the tower’s wizard, Scalone’s long-time friend and confidant. They decide to confront Zorad, but on the way to the Tower of Earth, Malik is kidnapped. He escapes only to find Scalone and another companion, have been captured by Zorad’s creatures and are being held in the dungeons beneath the tower.

Malik travels to the Tower of Sky province where he meets, and falls in love with, a blue-haired, bird-riding, extrovert who helps ease Malik’s anger and sorrow. Together they master a plan and rescue Malik’s friends.

In the sequels to the Tower of Earth, Malik and his companions will travel to the Tower of Sky, Tower of Illusion, Tower of Form, and Tower of Knowledge to collect the keys to The Wall. Their journey will return them to the Tower of Earth for a final confrontation with Zorad.
